Bernie Ecclestone says Formula 1 is likely to be broadcast in High Definition as early as next year.

The Formula 1 boss had said earlier this year that fans would have to wait until 2012 for HD broadcasts, but he suggested on Sunday that 2011 looked more likely now.

"I think what's being produced at the moment is very, very good but I think we'll be moving to High Definition, probably next year," Ecclestone told the BBC.

A Formula 1 survey showed earlier this year that a majority of fans were keen for F1 to be broadcast in HD.

Ecclestone had said a few months ago that F1 would be broadcast in HD when more fans at home were able to watch it, and enough broadcasters were ready to distribute it.

"We don't want to broadcast unless people want it," Ecclestone told AUTOSPORT in June. "I asked in England, the BBC, about it - how many people can receive it? They said about 20 per cent of the viewers who watch F1.

F1 HD upgrade not guaranteed, says Ecclestone Formula 1 racing's long-awaited upgrade to HD might be delayed past 2011 because the technology is not ready. F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone said he is still not sure the 2011 season will be shown in high definition. Even if the upgrade goes ahead, it will at best be '50 per cent HD and 50 per cent standard definition'.In September, Ecclestone indicated that the 2011 Grand Prix season would be broadcast in HD. Speaking to Germany's motorsport-total.com, he said the problem lies with in-car cameras, which are still too large and heavy to mount on the cars. Current in-car cameras are extremely lightweight, and Formula One's TV operation would also have to find double the bandwidth to beam the signals back from around the track. Ecclestone has been cautious about introducing new viewing technology into F1 since his attempt to introduce a multi-view service for pay-TV collapsed after just one year. Income was poor because fans weren't willing to pay for the extra screens while the races were also shown on free-to-air TV, and because of severe piracy problems in the German and Italian TV markets at the time. With many broadcasters still showing F1 on free-to-air channels, there's also little incentive for Ecclestone to upgrade to HD.

Ühtlasi on hea meel teatada, et Viasat Sport Baltic omab Vormel 1 MM sarja ülekannete õigusi ka järgmiseks hooajaks, ehk kogu nädalavahetus ja reklaamivabalt ka aastal 2011.

See tähendab ilmselt seda, et järgmisel aastal saab jälle RTL-i pealt vormelit vaadata.

Pühapäeval on MTV3 Max ja Canal+ Sport1 FTA, seega viimast vormelit saab soomekeelsete kommentaaridega vaadata-kuulata.
