HD+ drops encryption of Ultra HD channel on Astra

UHD1 ( Astra HD+) German DTH platform HD+ and its parent company SES will open their joint Ultra HD showcase channel
UHD1 to all DTH satellite households on Astra (19,2° East) during the Christmas holiday period.

The channel will be unencrypted 24 hours per day between December 24, 2015 and January 3, 2016.
This will enable viewers with Ultra HD TV sets to receive the programmes between 20.00 and 08.00 CET
( on Sundays and public holidays between 14.00 and 08.00 CET) normally encrypted and only accessible by HD+ customers.

“In many living rooms a new UHD TV set will be under the Christmas tree. However, the number of UHD channels in Germany is still very small. Our recommendation: UHD1 by Astra/HD+”, said Georges Agnes, managing director operations and product development at HD+.

“We want to make viewers with an UHD TV set a special Christmas present and will present UHD1 completely unencrypted during
the extended holiday period, enabling viewers to enjoy today the TV experience of tomorrow.”

During daytime UHD1 mainly targets retailers with short clips to illustrate the new TV standard while the evening window provides
HD+ customers with action, lifestyle, documentary and chill-out programmes.

On New Year’s Eve at midnight CET, UHD1 will show the first fireworks in Ultra HD.
The channel which launched in September 2015 can be received on Astra 1 on the frequency 10994H, SR22000, FEC5/6, DVB-S2/8PSK/HEVC.

Ofcom: 30 UHD channels via satellite.

UK spectrum regulator Ofcom is examining future demand for satellite bandwidth over the UK in a new Space Spectrum Strategy consultation document issued March 1st (and which closes for comments on May 10th this year).
One of its key findings, which is open to comment, is that it sees there being enough satellite spectrum – based on its current assessments – to deliver “30 Ultra HD channels, and continued growth in the number of HD channels” which could be “easily be accommodated within existing spectrum allocations”.
Ofcom says it believes these assessments to be in order because of technology improvements.
The regulator suggests that because of this availability of spectrum there is “less need” for it to take regulatory action.
Ofcom also believes that satellite could have a role in delivering the growing interest in ‘Internet of Things’ and machine-to-machine connectivity.
Ofcom also says that demand for satellite-delivered Broadband exists, in particular to those places where terrestrial fixed or mobile networks are absent or inadequate. “Satellites could, therefore, have a role in meeting this growing demand in the hardest-to-reach premises in the UK, and satellite broadband is one of the options for fulfilling the Government’s ambition to make 10 Mbit/s broadband universally available,” says the consultation document.

nimetusega Ultra Nature 4K.
Samas - ei positsiooni 19,2E ega ka 13E peal, kus operaator Orange France tegutseb, pole siiamaani sellise nimetusega

With just a few months to go until Sky launches a new Ultra High Definition (UHD) TV service, test transmissions have started on satellite.
Earlier this week, Sky's Director of Strategy, Nick Herm, said that UHD would arrive on the platform by summer. UHD TV will be available to subscribers that have taken up SkyQ, the recently launched premium pay TV service and receiver package from Sky.
Preparations are now underway for the launch of the new service with encrypted test transmissions now live on satellite, using capacity on Astra 2E. Full details of the scope and pricing of Sky UHD, as well as a firm launch date are expected to be announced soon.

Sky's UHD service will launch almost a year after BT launched its first UHD channel. The first major broadcast test of UHD in the UK took place in 2014, when during part of the summer, test broadcasts were carried in selected locations via digital terrestrial TV by BBC R&D. Ultimately, it appears UHD will be the preserve of cable, internet and satellite operators, where sufficient capacity for the new broadcast standard is available.
