The public service broadcaster BBC has begun a trial of the DVB-T2 specification. The specification was approved by the DVB Steering Board at its meeting on 26 June.
“We are delighted that our team in collaboration with our partners has been able to deliver such a key piece of technology in such a short timescale,” said Justin Mitchell, leader of the DVB-T2 modem development team at the BBC.
The tests, which are expected to lead to the transmission of BBC HD are on UHF channel 53 (730 MHz).

Testi alustati juuni lõpus 2008.

The BBC has announced the successful demonstration of a live end-to-end DVB-T2 transmission. The BBC developed a prototype DVB-T2 demodulator capable of receiving DVB-T2 signals.
This follows from the BBC's DVB-T2 test transmission at the end of June from the Guildford transmitter.
The BBC demonstration consisted of a 36 Mbit/sec multiplex carrying 3 high-definition programms each coded at 11 Mbit/sec each using MPEG-4 AVC.

Equipment manufacturer Pace has announced the development of a DVB-T2 set-top box capable of receiving and displaying DVB-T2 content.
This prototype receiver includes a tuner and demodulator from NXP Semiconductors and an MPEG-4 AVC high-definition decoder from Pace.
Already, the United Kingdom has announced that it will implement the DVB-T2 standard for the provision of HD services on the DTT platform.
The Pace DVB-T2 receiver will be displayed on its stand at IBC 2008.

BBC to launch regular HD DTT broadcasts in November 2009

The BBC will start regular DVB-T2 HD broadcasts in November 2009, said Catherine Smadja, head of strategy at the BBC, during a press briefing of the DVB Group. “One of the multiplexes will be upgraded to DVB-T2 and MPEG-4, on which there will be the BBC HD service and two others. And very soon thereafter, three other HD services.”

The new multiplex will launch in November 2009 in the first regions, but should eventually be available to 98.5% of the UK population. Five other DTT muxes will remain DVB-T.

“DVB-T2 is for us an absolute necessity”, Smadja said, “because DTT is the number one platform in the UK. We have to offer HD as a public service broadcaster on DTT, not only on cable and DTH. But how to get there, there is no business model, HD will only add to the costs. There might develop a market for HD pay-TV, but not for free-to-air. Luckily, the DVB Group solved the spectrum scarcity problem.”

MISO on 2:1 süsteem ehk kaks saate- ja üks vastuvõtuantenn, MIMO on 2:2 süsteem ehk kaks saate- ja kaks vastuvõtuantenni (V+H pol).
B21C (Broadcast for 21st Century) on projekt, milles osaleb 9 Euroopa riiki (ka Soome), käsitleb muuhulgas ka Euroopa DVB-T tulevikuvisioone.
Seal on öeldud, et DVB-T2 juurutamise esimesel kaubanduslikul etapil kasutatakse MISO süsteemi säilitamaks seniseid individuaal-vastuvõtuantenne ja kaabeldusi. Tulevikus on võimalik ka MIMO kasutuselevõtt.

To MIMO or not to MIMO?
Whenever a MIMO (multiple input multiple output) approach is used, it is reasonable to expect an improvement in robustness and a reduction in destructive interference in SFN. Arqiva has, in fact, been working with
the BBC and National Grid Wireless (NGW) on a trial in Guildford looking at the benefits of MIMO and says there will undoubtedly be capacity increases; in some cases it effectively doubles the capacity of a single channel.
The technology, however, falls foul of one of the commercial equirements of T2, which stipulates that the T2 broadcast will be compatible with existing DVB-T (and by implication analogue TV) domestic installations, ie single antenna, single downlead. The general consensus, driven by the commercial module, is that existing antenna system in peoples’ homes shouldn’t be disrupted, and these legacy issues preclude a MIMO type implementation.There is an option to deal with MISO (multiple input single output), and there are techniques such as Alamouti schemes which could allow that to happen so those are incorporated, according to Arqiva.
There is work to enable future development of a MIMO technology to
be allowed, but MIMO will not be incorporated from Day 1..

Põhjamaade(Soome,Rootsi,Norra Taani ja Island) ühisfoorum "NorDig" on määratlenud minimumnõuded dvb-t2 seadmetele.Punkt tööle pandi 11.06.2009 ühisseminaril Stockholmis.
Soome Digita OY tehniline juht Kari Risberg usub,et dvb-t2 seadmed jõuavad Soomes müügile 2009a lõpus.

Soomes selgub 18.06.2009 ,kes nendest neljast (Digita OY,Anvia, DNA ja Telemast Nordic) hakkab opereerima HD sagedustel E6 ja E8 (VHF).Veel ei teata kas võitjaid tuleb 1 või kummagi muxi peale eraldi 1.Ka pole kindel kas siis võitja hakkab HD kanaleid edastama DVB-T või DVB-T2.
VHF ala vajab parema katvuse tõttu ka vähem "maste" ja võrgu ehitamine on seetõttu odavam.

UPGRADING DTT FOR HD

The upgrade includes using two new broadcasting standards, known as MPEG-4 and DVB-T2 which are not available on current DTT devices. Many of the leading UK and international manufacturers are now developing receivers that include these new standards.

Although compatible receivers are not yet available we are aware from discussions with manufacturers that they are now developing suitable equipment with the intention of launching initial products in time for digital switchover in the Granada region in late 2009.

Digital terrestrial TV programmes are broadcast on six distinct sets of airwaves called multiplexes. Ofcom will facilitate the reorganisation of existing services onto five of the multiplexes, freeing the sixth multiplex to be upgraded to MPEG-4 and DVB-T2 for the new services. This multiplex is currently licensed to BBC Free to View Ltd (known as Multiplex B).
